Magic Jack is revolutionizing the telecommunications industry, by offering phone services for just $20 per year. That’s right - per year, not per month!
The way it works is: you plug the matchbox-size device into a usb port on your computer. On the other end of the device is a standard phone jack where you plug in your home phone. The Magic Jack then downloads its own software and within minutes you can start making calls.
The sound quality is on par with any of the other VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services and is the cheapest on the market to date. "It’s a lot like a land line, but instead of connecting to AT&T, you connect to my network," says Magic Jack owner Dan Borislow.
Magic Jack’s main competition comes from Skype and Vonage. Skype is a well known Voip service but requires a software download and you communicate using the computers microphone and speakers. Vonage requires you to use a router that they send you and typically costs about $20 per month.
The biggest knock on the Magic Jack is that their customer service is only available online thru chats. This can be very frustrating for those who are not tech savvy, or who are used to calling a customer service line.
